Pines became the subject of many of Hal's paintings. When he first came to Cape Cod in 1951 there were few trees. They had been harvested for ships and houses, try works, salt works, and firewood. By the time he took his studio in 1964 young pines had established. Over the years many grew tall, offering endless supply of subject. They in turn are being replaced by the hardwoods of a maturing forest.
